I’m Dr. Carolyn Salter, a physician, former mayor, and Rural Texas advocate running for US House of Representative for the Texas 5th Congressional District. In 2005, I was elected the first woman mayor of Palestine (I won that election by one vote!). I spent two terms addressing crumbling infrastructure and modernizing processes in city government, exercising more fiscal responsibility and transparency in local government, finding innovative ways of fostering economic growth and tourism in my small East Texas city. After my tenure as mayor, I remained an active part of the community by serving on not-for-profit boards and participating in local politics. I watched the economics of my beloved town, as well as rural areas across the country, suffer. Rural areas are challenged in economic growth. They have slow internet, crumbling roads, schools, and utility infrastructure. Young people are leaving for more opportunities. Big business makes deals with rural communities only after getting tax breaks and other incentives while mostly offering lower wages, part-time work or few benefits. There is not much money left to sponsor local entrepreneurs.
I was adopted and grew up in Odessa, Texas and Cushing, Oklahoma. My dad was the pipeline superintendent for Cities Service Oil Company in Cushing. My mother was a career school teacher in English, speech and drama and became a school counselor in 1970. I attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches and UT Southwestern in Dallas where I got my MD in 1981. I was on faculty in anesthesiology for three years at the VA hospital in Albuquerque, NM before returning to Texas in Brownwood in independent practice before moving to Palestine in 1991. I have administered anesthesia at local hospitals and practiced general medicine with my husband, Michael Gorby, MD FACP who is an internist, intensivist, and hospice director.
I am taking the fight for the American small town to our nation’s capital. I will make sure the voice of Texas is heard loud and clear and will hold all parties accountable for protecting the heart of the nation. I want to see the 5th District grow and I will work hard, like everyone from the district, to make that happen.
I live in Palestine with my husband Michael. We have one son, Scott, who lives and works in Dallas.
